Training Programme on

“Ornithology and Wildlife Conservation”

Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) will be conducting a Training Programme on ‘Ornithology and Wildlife Conservation’ for Wildlife enthusiasts from 17–27 January 2017. Individuals without any formal training and experience in wildlife biology/conservation will be given preference. The programme will involve five days of class room sessions at SACON followed by five days of field visit to a protected area near to Coimbatore, Tamilnadu

 About SACON

 The Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) is a Centre of Excellence of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India situated in Anaikatty surrounded by forests 25 km away from Coimbatore city. SACON’s mission is “help conserve India’s biodiversity and its sustainable use through research, education and people’s participation, with birds at the centre stage”.  SACON’s chief activities are research, conservation education and training, and dissemination of information. An important area of our interest is development of a conceptual and empirical framework for sustainable use of biodiversity.

 Course details:

Birds are one of the important and relatively well studied groups of organisms in the world. Bird watching is one of the most well accepted hobbies around the world. Hundreds of bird watchers from various parts of the country and abroad have contributed to the extensive knowledge on Ornithology available on this date in our country.

The programme will include lectures by SACON faculty and research scholars and will be on basics of Ornithology, Identification of birds, Indian biogeography, wildlife conservation and challenges across the country, and also citizen science initiatives. There will also be few evening lectures on select conservation projects being carried out by SACON.

The field visit will include a five day trip to a Protected Area (PA) near to Coimbatore. The participants will be taken on long treks to various places and will camp within the PA. During the treks the participants will be introduced to natural history observations, and bird watching will be an integral part of this course. The resource persons will teach the participants in the field about field ornithology, wildlife management and habitat restoration, estimation of bird /animal population, socio-economic issues and challenges facing PA managers.

Eligibility: The training programme is open to all class of individuals including students of age 20 and above.

Fee: Total fee for this course is Rs.25,000/- per head (Rupees Twenty Five Thousand only), which includes cost towards food and accommodation at SACON and at field site, and travel to the field site and back. At SACON accommodation will be provided on twin sharing basis and at field site it will be in tented/dormitory accommodation. The fee has to be paid by demand draft of any nationalized bank in favor of The Director, SACON, Coimbatore, or directly to the Finance section of SACON by cash.

How to apply: Applications from interested candidates must include a copy of their C.V. and a brief write-up explaining their motivation to participate in this short course as per prescribed format. Selection of candidates will be based on their write-up and C.V. Applications should reach the Course Director not later than 31st December 2016. Shortlisted candidates will be intimated about their selection for the course by 10th January 2016. Selected candidates are required to be medically fit. The participants will also be given a certificate of participation at the end of the course.
