Seeking Application for Internship/ Dissertation Work /Volunteers under the project entitled “Establishment of National Avian Forensic Laboratory at SACON for National Certification for Illegal Trafficking of Birds”

The Sàlim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) is a premier research centre conducting cutting edge research in the field of ornithology and natural history. Our centre has recently established a state-of-the-art Avian Forensic laboratory aiming to provide forensic services to government and other agencies. We are also establishing a DNA data bank and an avian biobank which will serve as reference sample repository. We are looking for highly motivated external students who are pursuing PhD/MPhil/Masters’ degree and would like to conduct the dissertation (2-4 years for PhD; 1 year for MPhil and <6 months for masters’ degree) work on bird genomics/ illegal trafficking of birds/ feather morphometrics and help in sample collection for our biobank. We are also looking for highly passionate volunteers and interns who wish to contribute to our project and help in conserving birds. Following procedure should be followed by interested students.

Dissertation Work: Students/scholars who are perusing PhD/MPhil/Masters’ degree may apply. The request should be dully forwarded by the Head of Department/Dean, and must provide the academic resumes of the recommended student(s) clearly specifying percentage marks obtained at various levels and the subjects covered, as well as the period of proposed project work. Candidate will be selected based on his/her expertise and interest. Internship: Students studying in recognized colleges, universities and institutions of higher learning in India and abroad are eligible to apply for the internship (1-6 months). Applications for the internship must be duly forwarded by the Principal / Dean / Registrar of the College / University / Institution in which the student is currently studying. Candidate will be selected based on his/her expertise and interest. Volunteers: A volunteer refers to a qualified person(s) who offers voluntary assistance to any research, academic and training activities of the Centre in lieu of exposure and experience in such activities, and who, thereof, does not entitle to any position, either temporary or permanent in the Centre. The ‘volunteer’ opportunity is purely for gaining personal exposure and experience. Candidates who have completed or pursuing graduate / post graduate degrees and other equivalent or higher studies in recognized colleges, universities and institutions of higher learning can opt to be a volunteer. Educational qualifications may be relaxed in exceptional cases at the discretion of Director SACON. Application Procedure: Interested applicants for Dissertation Work/Internship /Volunteering may apply, STRICTLY IN THE PRESCRIBED FORMAT (Annexure I – PhD/MPhil/ Masters’ Degree, Annexure II – Internship and Annexure III – Volunteers), and send the filled in application form by email to rampratapsingh81@gmail.com with a copy to salimalicentre@gmail.com. The subject line should mention ‘Dissertation/ Internship /Volunteer application under Avian Forensic Project’. This must be followed by a hard copy of application sent to: Dr. Ram Pratap Singh, Senior Scientist, Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), Anaikatty, Coimbatore – 641108, Tamil Nadu.

The Institute may provide accommodation to the external students/scholars on or off campus on payment basis based on availability of rooms on our hostel. In case of non-availability of accommodation in our hostel, the students may make his/her own arrangements for lodging outside the campus during the period of the work. Volunteers will not be provided accommodation on campus.
