Application

Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), a Centre of Excellence under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India requires an Extension Officer (Scientist) in the pay scale of Rs. 15,600 – 39,100 + 6,600 (PB-3).

Extension Officer (Scientist)

Essential Qualifications : i) Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from a recognized university, ii) a minimum of five years of experience in extension work, and iii) a good track record of research supported by publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Desirable: Experience in setting up Extension Centres, organizing TV and other media programmes, good communication and editorial skills.

Tasks & Responsibilities: i) Conduct / coordinate extension and education programmes in the field of Ornithology and Natural History ii) Develop linkages with other organizations and contribute to institutional activities of SACON such as research, teaching and training and iii) Provide editorial inputs in bringing out Newsletter, Annual and Technical reports of SACON.

General Instructions:

  1. Salary, allowances and other benefits such as CPF, Medical reimbursement, gratuity and LTC will be as per SACON rules.
  2. Appointment will be on contract basis for a period of five years and continuance of the same will be based on performance.

 Walk-in interview to engage Project Consultants

Application

The Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) is a Centre of Excellence under the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India.  SACON wishes to engage Project Consultants (Indian Nationals only) for its ongoing research project titled “Developing a conservation action plan for Forest Owlet (Heteroglaux blewitti), a Critically Endangered species endemic to central India”, through a  Walk-in interview to be held on 21.12.2018.

Project Title: Developing a conservation action plan for Forest Owlet (Heteroglaux blewitti), a  critically Endangered species endemic to central India.

a)      Name of the position: Senior Project Consultant (01 No.).

Age: Shall not exceed 50 years as on the date of interview (21.12.2018); Duration: Six months, Emoluments: Rs. 70,000/- (consolidated) per month; Essential Qualification: Candidates must possess a Ph.D. Degree in Wildlife Science/Life Science or any other allied fields from a recognized University, with minimum 10 years research experience in the field of ecology; Desirable Qualification: Research experience in the fields of statistical modeling of species distributions, occupancy modeling, habitat modeling, basics of GIS; Project Description: The project aims to update the information on Forest Owlet distribution, its habitat requirements and population connectivity through habitat models, ground surveys and DNA analysis and prepare a comprehensive Forest Owlet Conservation Action Plan. The project has three major components: a) field sampling across its predicted distribution range in the States of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Chattisgarh and Jharkhand, using an occupancy framework for determining variables that govern Forest Owlet distribution, b) spatial analysis to test and refine existing distribution models and c) molecular analysis to resolve its phylogeny and estimate population genetic connectivity.

Tasks Description:

Prior to field work for each site to be sampled: Design and plan sampling protocol for each site to be sampled to align with the satellite imagery analyses, identify variables for estimating detection and occupancy probability, co-ordinate with spatial analyses team.

During field work: Visit field sites to oversee work and change/correct any requirement, periodically analyse data along with spatial analysis to check for errors.

Analyses after data collection: Co-ordinate spatial and occupancy analysis, other statistical analysis and modelling that would support occupancy analyses and interpretation of results.

Preparation of technical report: Inputs into preparation of Final Technical Report.

The tenure of the Senior Project Consultant will initially be for a period of six months and extendable for three more months as per the requirement of the project and as outlined in the schedule below,

2019: January to March (3 months)

2019: July to September (3 months)

2020: July to September (3 months)

The headquarters of the Senior Project Consultant will be at SACON, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

b)     Name of the position: Junior Project Consultant (01 No.)

Age: Shall not exceed 40 years as n the date of interview (21.12.2018); Duration: Six months,  Emoluments: Rs. 45,000/- (consolidated) per month; Essential Qualification: Candidates must possess a MSc. Degree in Remote sensing and Geo-informatics from a recognized University, with minimum three years research experience in the field of Remote Sensing and GIS; Desirable Qualification: Research experience in the fields of GIS, Remote Sensing and spatial analyses applied in the field of ecology; Project Description: The current project aims to update the information on Forest Owlet distribution, its habitat requirements and population connectivity through habitat models, ground surveys and DNA analysis and prepare a comprehensive Forest Owlet Conservation Action Plan. Prior to field work for each site to be sampled: Processing of satellite imagery for Central India – an area of approximately 55,000 km2, download cloud free Sentinel 1 and 2 satellite data from the area to be sampled across Central India to align with month of sampling, grid the regions of interest and process imagery data to remove human used areas such as settlements, cities, agriculture among others to determine areas to be sampled.

During field work: Ground truth information to be processed at the time when data is sent from field, corrections and additional measurement required to be conveyed to field team.

Analyses after data collection: Imagery analysis will be aligned with occupancy data for further niche and occupancy analyses, testing and improving existing niche models for each State, presenting the current distribution map of Forest Owlet, predicting future trends for species.

The tenure of the Junior Project Consultant will initially be for a period of six months from the date of joining and extendable for three more months depending on the requirement of the project as outlined in the schedule below:

2019: January to March (3 months)

2019: May to July (3 months)

2020: July to September (3 months)

The headquarters of the Junior Project Consultant will be at IISER, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.

1. Assessing the population status of synanthropic bird species of India, including House Sparrow and House Crow, and their response to urbanization.

2 Assessment of status, distribution and threats to the population of Sarus Crane Antigone antigone in Uttar Pradesh, India

Name of the Position: Junior Research Biologist (1 No.); Age: Below 28 years on the stipulated last date for receiving applications; the upper age limit may be relaxed in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and Physically Challenged category as per Central Government norms; Duration: The selected candidate will be initially engaged for nine months and his or her tenure may be extended for further period on the basis of his/her performance or requirement of the project; Emoluments: Rs. 25,000 per month plus HRA; Essential Qualification: Masters’ Degree in Zoology/Wildlife Biology/Ecology/Environmental Science/Life Sciences from a recognized University with a minimum of 55% marks or above; Desirable Qualification: i) Prior working experience in Sarus Crane survey, research programs,  ii) Knowledge on using GIS tools, iii) Proficiency in spoken Hindi;  Description of Work: The selected candidate is expected to undertake field surveys in the entire state of Uttar Pradesh independently; the survey will have to be done during the entire project tenure spanning different seasons.

3 Project title: Determining the effects of socio-ecological forces shaping striped hyaena (Hyaena hyaena) population in the Western Ghats part of Tamil Nadu, southern India.

Seeking Application for Internship/ Dissertation Work /Volunteers under the project entitled “Establishment of National Avian Forensic Laboratory at SACON for National Certification for Illegal Trafficking of Birds”

The Sàlim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) is a premier research centre conducting cutting edge research in the field of ornithology and natural history. Our centre has recently established a state-of-the-art Avian Forensic laboratory aiming to provide forensic services to government and other agencies. We are also establishing a DNA data bank and an avian biobank which will serve as reference sample repository. We are looking for highly motivated external students who are pursuing PhD/MPhil/Masters’ degree and would like to conduct the dissertation (2-4 years for PhD; 1 year for MPhil and <6 months for masters’ degree) work on bird genomics/ illegal trafficking of birds/ feather morphometrics and help in sample collection for our biobank. We are also looking for highly passionate volunteers and interns who wish to contribute to our project and help in conserving birds. Following procedure should be followed by interested students.

Dissertation Work: Students/scholars who are perusing PhD/MPhil/Masters’ degree may apply. The Institute may provide accommodation to the external students/scholars on or off campus on payment basis based on availability of rooms on our hostel. In case of non-availability of accommodation in our hostel, the students may make his/her own arrangements for lodging outside the campus during the period of the work. Volunteers will not be provided accommodation on campus.
