Calling for Application to engage Research Personnel

Application

The Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) is a Centre of Excellence under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, in the field of Ornithology and Natural History. SACON wishes to engage research personnel (Indian Nationals only) for the following research projects:

1. Ecosystem requirements of hornbills and assess the status and distribution of select mammals in Anjunad and adjoining Landscape, Western Ghats.

Name of the Position: Junior Research Biologist (01 No.); Age:  Below 28 years on the stipulated last date for receiving applications;the upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST and 3 years for OBC/Women and Physically Challenged category as per Central Government norms; Duration: One year; the selected candidate will be initially engaged for one year and his/her tenure may be extended for a further period on the basis of his/her performance or  requirement of the project; Emoluments: Rs. 25,000 per month plus HRA; Essential Qualification: Masters’ Degree in Zoology / Wildlife Biology/Wildlife Science/Ecology / Forestry/Environmental Science/ Environmental Management/ Life Sciences from a recognized University with a minimum of 55% marks or above; Desirable Qualification: i) Knowledge of Wildlife Biology/Conservation Science and ii) Proficiency in spoken Malayalam/Tamil; Description of Work: The selected candidate is expected to undertake field surveys and ecological studies as per the requirements of the project in the forests of Munnar landscape and adjoining areas in Kerala and assist the Principal Investigator in project activities. 

2. Characterization of community reserves and assessment of their conservation values in Meghalaya 

Name of the Position: Junior Research Biologist (01 No.); Age:  Below 28 years on the stipulated last date for receiving applications; the upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST and 3 years for OBC/Women and Physically Challenged category as per Central Government norms; Duration: One year; the selected candidate will be initially engaged for one year and his/her tenure may be extended for a further period on the basis of his/her performance or  requirement of the project; Emoluments: Rs. 25,000 per month plus HRA; Essential Qualification: Masters’ Degree in Zoology/ Forestry/Wildlife Sciences/ Wildlife Biology/Ecology/ Environmental Science/ Biodiversity & Conservation /Environmental Sciences/ Environmental Management/ Life Sciences from a recognized University with a minimum of 55% marks or above; Desirable Qualification: Knowledge/work experience on faunal studies especially mammals, camera trapping techniques, using GIS & RS spatial tools & programs and willingness to work in Meghalaya; Description of Work: The selected candidate is expected to undertake faunal (mammals) studies as per the requirements of the project in different Community Reserves of Meghalaya and assist the Principal Investigator in other project activities.

3. Assessing the distribution, population and habitat use of three endangered species to develop a conservation plan for species and their habitats

Name of the Position: Junior Research Biologist (2 No’s); Age:  Below 28 years on the stipulated last date for receiving applications; the upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST and 3 years for OBC/Women and Physically Challenged category as per Central Government norms; Duration: One year; the selected candidate will be initially engaged for one year and his/her tenure may be extended for a further period based on the   requirement of the project; Emoluments: Rs. 25,000 per month plus HRA;  Essential Qualification: Masters’ Degree in Zoology/ Wildlife Biology/Life Sciences/Ecology/Wildlife Science/ Environmental Science from a recognized University with a minimum of 55% marks or above.  Desirable Qualification: Research experience in wildlife studies; Description of work: The selected candidate needs to work in remote areas of north-eastern and western India to collect ecological data on bird species. 

4. Assessing anthropogenic threats to large carnivore population in the Western Ghats part of Tamil Nadu, southern India.

Name of the Position: Project Fellow (01 No.); Age:  Below 28 years on the stipulated last date for receiving applications; the upper age limit may be relaxed up to five years in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST and three years for OBC/Women and Physically Challenged category as per Central Government norms; Duration: Three years; the selected candidate will be initially engaged for one year and his/her tenure may be extended for further periods on the basis of his/her performance or  requirement of the project; Emoluments: Rs. 29,000/- consolidated per month (inclusive of HRA);  Essential Qualification: Masters’ Degree in Wildlife Science/Wildlife Biology/Ecology/Zoology/Life Sciences/Environmental Science/ Biodiversity and Conservation related subjects from a recognized University with a minimum of 55% marks or above; Desirable Qualification: i) One year experience after PG Degree in field ecological studies that include habitat ecology/human-wildlife interactions/carnivore ecology, ii) familiarity with GIS tools and analytical techniques in writing scientific publications, iii) should be able to carry out rigorous field work independently  and iv) Proficiency in English; Work Description: i)The selected candidate is expected to undertake extensive field surveys independently across human-wildlife interface areas of Tamil Nadu; ii) The candidate should be well versed in wildlife survey techniques with respect to human-wildlife interaction.

5. Establishment of National Avian Forensic Laboratory at SACON for National Certification for Illegal Trafficking of Birds.

Name of the Position: Junior Research Biologist-Bioinformatics (1 No); Age: Below 28 years on the date of interview; the upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/ and three years for OBC/Women and Physically challenged category; Duration: One year from the date of engagement initially and may be extended for further periods based on the requirement of the project; Fellowship: Rs. 25,000/per month plus HRA as applicable; Essential Qualification: MSc/ BE/ BTech / MTech in Bioinformatics/ Computer Science/ Biotechnology/ Biochemistry/ Genetics/ Life Sciences with a minimum of 55% or more; Desirable Qualification: Must have working experience with Next Generation Sequencing datasets and well versed with Linux /bash and routine command line tools for large scale data processing. Must have working knowledge of Perl, Python and/or R; Job description: The selected candidate is expected to undertake next generation sequencing, whole genome sequence assembly including tertiary analysis, maintain lab server and assist project Investigators in ongoing project activities.

  1. Candidates applying for any of the above positions should possess the Essential Qualification as per the details given against the position. Candidates willing to apply for more than one advertised positions should submit separate application form.
  1. The upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST and 3 years for OBC/Women and Physically Challenged category as per Central Government norms.
  1. Selected candidate will be engaged initially for a period mentioned against the advertised position. Subsequently his/her tenure may be extended depending upon the exigencies of work at sole discretion of the Centre and satisfactory performance of the candidate.
  1. Selected candidate may be allowed hostel accommodation at SACON as per availability. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules.
  1. The selection of the candidate(s) will be based on the walk-in interview to be held at SACON, Moongilpallam, Anaikatty, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu on 25.04.2019. Candidates should report to the venue at 09.00 am on the interview day.
